After the fall of President Suharto in 1998, Indonesia ran free and fair legislative elections in 1999, which led to the establishment of democratic rule. Today, Indonesia is the world’s third most populous democracy, the world’s largest archipelagic state, and the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation (CIA, 2014). Despite Suharto never having formally been convicted, for health reasons, his fall was allegedly due to corruption. Suharto, who became president after the first Indonesian President, Sukarno, governed Indonesia with authoritarian rule under the political system called the ‘New Order’. It was thought that corruption was endemic under Suharto’s regime because of the country’s lack of democratic rule. Since then, it has become apparent, however, that increasing democracy in Indonesia did not lead to increased accountability of politicians and corporations in managing public funds and other interests. Despite successfully running three peaceful presidential and legislative elections, the democratic Indonesian government has failed to stop corruption. Indonesia is today a democracy and the 16th largest economy in the world, but corruption remains endemic (Cochrane, 2013). Several members of the Indonesian Parliament, Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat (DPR) have been charged in relation to significant corruption cases and some are still under investigation by the Indonesian anti-corruption commission, Komisi Pemberantasan Korupsi (KPK). High-level government officers, including police officers and judges, have also been implicated in corruption cases. Most of these cases are in relation to misused government funds
