Abstract
Research findings from the Institute for Economics and Peace on 2018 found that 30% of the world population experience war in their home countries. Hence, some people must search for safety in other countries in order to flee from war and are usually known as refugees. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) defines refugees as people who have been forced to leave their country of origin to escape persecution, war, or violence. According to the regulation by the United Nations on 1951, refugees will be transferred to transit countries and later moved to resettlement countries. In the middle of 2017, some resettlement countries reduced and even cut the resettlement quotas for refugees entirely that caused refugees to reside in transit countries for quite long and the numbers are estimated to increase. In the beginning of 2018, press reported the lives of refugees in Jakarta. About 100-200 refugees did not have a place to live and are forced to stay in the sidewalks of immigration detention centres and next to the UNHCR office. Some refugees even made tents from used materials found in the area. A study about refugees’ mental health in Germany found that 75-80% of refugees experience trauma, PTSD, and other anxiety disorders that are influenced by factors such as uncertain life situations and social rejection towards refugees. This study aims to give an architectural solution regarding the provision of a shelter that can facilitate better mental health outcomes for refugees in Jakarta.
